Many survivalist groups believe that the United States is on the verge of a societal collapse. They believe that the current economic situation will get work and due to an economic collapse of epic proportions, society will break down and become uncivilized, destroying itself from within. This believe stems from historical references of similar small scale breakdowns in the event of a disaster. Unlike the collapse before the great depression, some experts believe a modern-day collapse would be much more destructive and violent. In the era of the great depression, families were less dependent on the economy than we are now. In those times, peope were capable of growing their own food and getting by using their own abilities. The thought is that during this day and time people are much more dependent on the current infrastructure to provide their daily needs for them. In addition, populations are much more concentrated than they once were which makes for a perfect storm of civil unrest.
