 A pole reversal is a change in the orientation of the earth's magnetic field such that the positions of magnetic north and magnetic south become interchanged. This process is thought to occur on a cycle of thousands of years per reversal. By studying solidified volcanic remains, scientists have come to detect these reversals that have been determined to occur on an erratic cycle varying from thousands of years to millions of years.
There are varying opinions on what causes the reversals to take place. There is a lot of discussion and speculation on when the next reversal will occur. It is thought that the reversal process is very unpredictable and could take anywhere from centuries to millions of years, while others believe that we are long overdue for a reversal. Because the magnetic reversal has never been observed by humans, it is difficult to predict what the field should be leading up to a reversal. During a pole reversal we would have a lot more to worry about than simply recalibrating compasses. Scientists speculate that the earths magnetic sheild which protects us from cosmic radiation would be diminished allowing harmful rays to reach the earths surface. In addition, it would severely impact or negate the use of communications and other electronic equipment. Some believe it would be a near extiction event that would wipe out all life on the planet.
