It is no question that thousands of meteorites enter the earth's atmosphere on a daily basis. Astronomers have been tracking Near Earth Objects (NEOs) for years and say there are 30-50 NEO asteroids that pass near the planet anually. In 2012, there are 41 NEOs that will pass by the earth. The closest will be 2004 RQ252 which passes on April 13 and will approach between .0376 and .0388 AU (over 3 MILLION miles), so it is not going to be very close. However, space is a very big place and it is always possible that something could appear from the dark void on an impending collision with the earth.
If a large asteroid did collide with the earth, it could generate a tremendous explosion that could affect all life on the planet. Some scientists have believed that the Gulf of Mexico is the crater left from where a meteorite hit which killed off all the dinosaurs. Regardless, scientists agree that if a large enough meteorite were to collide with the planet that it could wipe out all life on it. If a giant meteorite were to strike the earth, the resulting explosion could create an earth encompasing cloud that could block out the sun, creating the next ice age.
