A recent story on National Geographic entitled What If the Biggest Solar Storm on Record Happened Today? examines what would happen if a major solar storm were to erupt as it has in years past. It states "the biggest solar storm on record happened in 1859" and if it were to occur today at that same magnitude, it would severely disrupt societies technical infrastructure, taking with it GPS systems, cell phones, airplanes, and automobiles. "But the big fear is what might happen to the electrical grid, since power surges caused by solar particles could blow out giant transformers" states the article, since "Such transformers can take a long time to replace." The idea that polar shifts will potentially create "global superstorms" has been making headlines in the media recently. Some have hypothesized that a polar shift will bring about the great destruction of 2012. As we get closer to to the "doom year", more people are talking about it. In an article in Salem News, a report on recent evidence is presented to support the potential for worldwide devastation as a result of these storms. The article states "Some climate researchers, monitoring the rapidly shifting magnetic field, are predicting superstorms in the future with winds as high as 300 to 400mph." According to some news outlets, there are three giant spaceships headed toward Earth that may coincide with the predicted 2012 rendezvous by some predicting an alien encounter. Presumably, the spaceships were detected by the HAARD search system based in Alaska which is designed to study the Northern Lights. Fact or fiction? You decide. In typical fashion, Hollywood cashes in on the 2012 predictions by releasing a movie with the simple title, "2012". Personally, I think "Year of Doom" would have made a more catchy title. :-) Although widely disputed as misinterpretation by modern-day Mayan representatives, it appears that the movie is focusing in on the Mayan predictions as part of the focus of their plot. It will be interesting to see how the movie portrays the proposed end of the world events. But you will have to wait a little while. The movie is slated to open in theaters on November 13, 2009.  It appears that the Norwegian government has constructed a facility to protect the worlds crop seeds from destruction so that they could be used after a disaster.
"A "doomsday" seed vault built to protect millions of food crops from climate change, wars, and natural disasters opened Tuesday deep within an Arctic mountain in the remote Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard." "The vault will serve as a backup for hundreds of other seed banks worldwide.
